Middleburg Artist Residence
This home was originally a one story cottage with limited space on the second floor. We envisioned a complete renovation, and with the encouragement of the contractor, decided to completely remove and rebuild the second floor. The buildings were modest in scale, simply sited together, and elegantly reserved. We sought to keep that sensibility between the buildings and to the land. The interiors were envisioned as simple spaces, with quiet traditional undertones that allowed the owner’s modern art and sculpture to be the focus. We introduced slightly vaulted and planked ceilings, while maintaining a comfortable scale. The feature of the first floor is the family room wall of niches that allow for books, sculpture, and other memorabilia to be displayed.
